The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum were announced today. The twelve nominees are: ABBA, Darlene Love, Donna Summer, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, KISS, Laura Nyro, LL Cool J, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Chantels, The Hollies and The Stooges. Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 25th Annual Induction Ceremony on March 15, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Five of the twelve nominees will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year’s nominees had to release their first single no later than 1984.

The inductees will be announced in January 2010, and all inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

These would be my five votes:

Jimmy Cliff: The real “legend” in this bunch for how influential he was.

The Stooges: One that should have been in a long time ago.

Donna Summer: As much as people now consider disco a blight on the popular music timeline, it was very important and no one as much as Donna.

Genesis: Powerful Prog-Rockers are finally getting the respect they deserve and what better way to cap it off then a Rock Hall nod.

The Hollies: Britain’s “garage” band inspired many bands including one of my favorites: Phish.

As for who will actually be in:
ABBA
Kiss
RHCP
The Stooges
LL Cool J

I have been a Moody Blues fan for 40 years. When are you people going to get them into the Hall of Fame??????? They are amazingly talented and they are the ones who created the first “concept album” which was Days of Future Past. What is going on? Also I was amazed to find out that Peter Frampton is not in the Hall of Fame. How could that be? Saw both of them in concert this summer and they are truly the cream of the crop. Get it right will you please.

I think the nominees for 2010 are all valid choices with standing.
However, I’m wondering what criteria is used to be nominated. Kool and the Gang has at least a dozen chart toppers, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging, Ladies’ Night, Too Hot ,Get Down on It , Joanna , Straight Ahead ,Tonight ,Misled, Fresh, Cherish, Summer Madness and what some would consider an international classic Celebration. Why have they not been considered? I think the hall and nominating committee are slighting a great American band.

Laura Nyro No

The Hollies
KISS
ABBA
Genesis
Donna Summer
Sad to put the songwriters up against the big name performers. They should be inducted as well. However, I agree with many other commenters that there are still a great deal many more who should be in before there others listed. RHCP - Really? Have they defined a genre or generation? No, they haven’t. All of their stuff sounds the same. Just another festival band. LL Cool J - Fun, but not definative either. Groups like Heart, Rush, The Moody Blues (as listed above in other comments) or even the 1980’s Post Punk/New Wave Pop acts. They DEFINED a generation and fueled MTV. Madonna, REM, The Police and U2 are as close as the Rock Hall has been to recognizing the 1980’s. What’s wrong with straight foward-Genre Defining- Pop Music. Think Duran Duran, Billy Idol and INXS. Think John Hughes movie soundtrack artists. No one really remembers The Stooges (as compared to the Sex Pistols, The Ramones or The Clash). Pop music deserves to be recognized for it’s influences too! People will come to the Rock Hall to see the more familar, idols from their teens exhibits before they’ll come for The Chantals and The Stooges (no offense personally to them nor their fans). Wake up RH! You need to spread the nominations around a bit to generate visitors.

RHCP - HELL YEAH!!!

The Stooges - I saw Iggy Pop open for Pretenders in 87. He should have been the headliner. He ruined the audience for Crissy; we were spent. ‘Bout freakin’ time!!!!

KISS - Just induct Paul’s Chest Hair, Gene’s tongue and call it done!! What talent?

Genesis - both versions of the band were awesome for different reasons.

Donna Summer - thousands of drag queens lip synching her songs couldn’t be wrong.

I would like to know why the Moody Blues have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Surely they meet all the criteria. They continue to tour and have toured for over 40 years. They have been described as a progressive rock band and have sold over 50 million albums. Nights in White Satin was No. 2 on the billboard list. More information can be obtained by going to Wikipedia.org. Plus they are nice guys! I have seen them in Cleveland at least 6 times. So I would really like to know why the Moody Blues have not been induced.

Great nominees all the way around this year. The Hollies, The Stooges. You have to consider, Which one of these changed the one of the tributatries to the river of rock. Maybe ABBA long term, but there are so many here that I would not say are rock. This is more a Music Hall of Fame.

You can do nothing to get your pet person into the hall. They may or may not get there eventually. But Who cares? Dinosaurs existed before they were put in museums.

There are lots of people I would like to see get in… but rock and roll has been around a long time… a lot of groups are deserving.

Maybe if you contribute $ somewhere you can have a say. Otherwise, you are as plankton in an ocean.

This is easy for me as for who deserves to be inducted…KISS transcends pop culture they are to Rock and Roll what apple pie is to America. Next is The Stooges their style helped bring a grit and power to American punk music. ABBA needs to be in just for the same reason KISS needs to be in they helped establish a cultural landscape during the ’70s. Donna Summer because the Queen needs to be finally respected there have been artists trying to imulate her for decades. Then Jimmy Cliff he is a legend in music and helped with a whole style. Now on who will be inducted KISS, ABBA, LL Cool J, RHCP, and The Stooges

Since everyone already voted in Kiss, The stooges and Genesis and ABBA already, i’m going to vote in Laura Nyro, the woman was pure genius. In the 60’s few were the women that actually took a risk, she is the BASE of every female singer/songwriter, she mixes folk, rock, jazz and gospel (sometimes on the same song!).

She was there before everyone, i love all of these singers, but she was there before all the great ones: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Rickie Lee Jones, Bjork, Tori Amos…etc. All i know is that Laura never get the credit, she is largely overlooked by People, since music critics love her, so i hope she gets inducted. Every artist had a hit covering Laura in the 60’s, and the definitive version of these songs, the orginals were never heard! she’s no longer among us, but her songs are timeless. She mixed jazz and soul way before winehouse, and even Aretha, like i said she’s the BASE. Female Singer/songwriter, pianist, an amazing voice, she is the best white-girl-singing-like-a-black-girl of alltime, and Kate Bush’s high notes are nothing compared to Laura’s highs.

She’s the Base of every female artist, she SHOULD Be there! She never sold a lot, she never recieved the credit, so its time to actually start giving her some! She was arty, a true artist, and never sold hersef to appeal the masses. Creativy, that was Laura Nyro, exploring, when every female were doing the basics and covering male artists!

GO LAURA! 2010 is your Year! And ABBA, donna, genesis, kiss and stooges, also deserves it, so it’s going to be a competition! :)

Definitively, Laura Nyro, who defined the female singer-songwriter years before Joni Mitchell and who successfully achieved to challenge the conventional limitations of songwriting with her own breathtakingly original recordings, should be inducted in 2010. She was the first female artist who achieved to take total control of her work not only in terms of writing and composing but also producing and arranging. She paved the way for many of 20th Century’s greatest songwriters. She influenced generations of musicians, from Steely Dan to Elton John, from Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush.

And to the chagrin of some who like to critisize their music…They also influenced a wide variety of bands, just a few with members who claim KISS as an influence…Soundgarden, Lenny Kravitz, Rage Against the Machine, Garth Brooks, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Poison, Toad the Wetsprocket, Nirvana.

Definitely ABBA, Genesis & Laura Nyro. ABBA Greatest Hits was the first album I owned in 1976. They were the first band that influenced and shaped my musical tastes at the age of 10. What’s great about ABBA is all of their albums are great SOLID albums. They were well rounded, and nearly every song could’ve been a single. I believe it is due to their influence, I can find good stuff in every genre of music. I am a percussionist & can play every style with ease because I learned from the ABBA & playing to their recorde from 10 years & up.
Genesis is where I graduated from ABBA. Abacab turned me to FM rock & all it had to offer from the 60’s to now. Another band that churned out quality albums.
Laura Nyro I discovered from putting an album on the turntable at a record store. It was Eli & the 13th Confession. I immediately thought of Rickie Lee Jones, Carole King, Joni Mitchell & PJ Harvey. Bought up more albums & every one was a gem (especially the first 5 or 6).

Donna Summer, Genesis, The Hollies, The Stooges,& most of all KISS…The others are obvious…ABBA should be there, but after 10 yrs of being snubbed, we’re coming up on the timeframe where many metal acts like Bon Jovi, Metallica & Motley Crue will be eligible. It’s insane that you don’t have KISS precede all of these bands… My next question is where is Alice Cooper?

It would be an absolute embarrassment if Genesis were not one of the five selected for induction. The prog-rock movement of the early 70’s has just about been completely ignored, and bands like Genesis, Yes, and Jethro Tull were at the forefront of that movement. Even though I wasn’t a big fan of theirs, KISS should also be in there as well for changing how a concert is put on. The Stooges, Jimmy Cliff, and The Hollies ought to be the other three inductees.

ABBA! Finally! Those hard rockin’ metalheads from Sweden should have been inducted a looooong time ago! Who could forget such blistering rock & roll anthems as Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia and of course most of all I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do?

And what’s most astounding is that these dweebs are being nominated while Status Quo has never even been considered. For any European rock fan who grew up in the 70’s, Quo was pretty much the only antidote for ABBA’s sugarcoated swill.

As far as the 2010 inductees are concerned, The Stooges have been the Susan Lucci of the HOF for far too long, put them in already!! Chili Peppers for sure, LL Cool J, why not? I think Donna Summer dubbed as the Queen of Disco would be a good representation for that genre. And I’m surprised Genesis got looked at, it would nice to get some more prog rock representation in there. A long time ago, I would have said Kiss should be in there, but because they went from being a rock band to a corporate brand, and Gene Simmons is nothing but a bloodsucking capitalist, I would say NO to them!!

FINALLY!!! Laura Nyro should have been inducted long, long ago- her time to shine is way overdue! In my never humble opinion, no other female artist has impacted the direction of the rock/pop genre as powerfully as Laura, and all the artists who had chart-topping hits with songs she wrote will surely attest to the fact that her music gave them an edge and credibility they could never have achieved without her. She was more than an innovative songwriter, though - her own performances were breathtaking and the message rang crystal clear to a generation of artists, misfits and cast-offs, later to be known as “The Tribe”, like no other had before or has since. Laura took rock music into groundbreaking directions like animal rights, feminism, drug addiction, same-sex attraction…all the stuff that makes the genre what it is today! Please induct her this time - it will mean so much to so many!

I wholeheartedly agree w/the above poster. And anyone considering RHCP and LLCJ before Laura Nyro needs to get their heads checked. I am NO hippie and love ALL genres of music, but Nyro was cranking out influential, UNdefineable music even before Joni Mitchell. Carole King was writing ditties w/Phil Spector, but really Nyro set the bar so high and deserves a lot of the credit. Hopefully the ballots go out to someone w/actual brains, and that TALENT and ones who INFLUENCED others will be considered first. And speaking of Nyro, where the heck is Labelle? The Supremes or any girl group today has nothing on them. I do agree w/another poster that Todd Rundgren is SEVERELY overlooked as performer, writer, producer, GENIUS. I’d eventually like to see Donna Summer and Genesis inducted, as well as Jimmy Cliff.

Let’s face it.
Genesis: 1.Has been around for over 40 years. 2. Over 150 MILLION albums sold. 3. Pioneered in areas of Progressive Rock that other prog bands mostly stayed away from. 4. They are around the #1 live band of all time. Because in the early days Peter Gabriel revolutionized the concert into a stage show with costumes and insane stage personas, they then went on the Invent the Vari Light!(FYI: the lights every band uses in there concert to this day) Pioneered the prisim Sound system(Again FYI: Sound system that is now the staple for all concerts arenas) 5. First band to every have a sold out arena tours.6. First to every play 4 sold out shows at the world famous Wembley Stadium in London. 7. Went threw the biggest most surprising lead singer swap in the history of rock. and then became even bigger. 8. First to ever play 4 stadiums, back to back to back to back. 9. Spawned two of the most succcesful solos cares in rock, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. not to mention Mike and the Mechanics. 10. Genesis guitarist Steve hackett First to every record GUITAR TAPPING on an album. Also popularizing sweep picking. 11. Created some of the most intricately arranged music in rock history. Shall i continue. Their should be no doubt in anyones mind (even if you don’t care for Genesis) That Genesis deserves it…

The Hollies were a GREAT band!!!

Laura Nyro is one of the best songwriters of all time, arguably second to Carole King.

Donna Summer was the queen of disco.

Rush still needs a nod, they deserve it more than most of those people…

And while LL Cool J was a good rapper he was nowhere NEAR as influential as Run DMC, NWA, or Grandmaster Flash. He’s not ready yet. And while RHCP are very influential as an alternative group, they haven’t been around nearly as long as who I mentioned above. Maybe in 5 years.

Genesis:
1.Has been around for over 40 years, one of the most longevic ever.

2. Over 150 MILLION albums sold, top 30 highet selling of all time. If you include all of the alubum sales that the members of genesis have been involved in their is well over 500 million. ONLY behind ELVIS and MICHEAL JACKSON. (both have 1 billion)

3. Pioneered in areas of Progressive Rock, acoustic progressive rock (which is unheard of. songs average time around 9min). other prog bands all stayed in the same general prog area, except genesis.

4.They are around the #1 live band of all time. Because in the early days Peter Gabriel revolutionized the concert into a stage show with costumes and insane stage personas, they then went on the Invent the Vari Light!(FYI: the lights every band uses in there concert to this day) Pioneered the prisim Sound system(Again FYI: Sound system that is now the staple for all concerts arena sound systems)

5. First band to every have a sold out arena tours.

6. First to every play 4 sold out shows at the world famous Wembley Stadium in London.

7. Went threw the biggest most surprising lead singer swap in the history of rock. and then became even bigger and 10 months after losing peter gabriel went to create a top charting album, THEN AFTER THAT, 10 months later AGAIN cam out with an even bigger album. How many top bands can do that nowadays? NONE!

12. Held one of the Biggest concerts of all time 500,000 strong. ANd it was FREE!

13. Pioneered that largest video screen ever used in a concert over 230FEET! (20 million dollar stage)

14. At one point during the 1980’s Genesis was considered the richest band in the WORLD, But admit to not once arguing over money over money.

15. Perhaps the best documented band of ALL time, 14 studios albums, 5 live albums. and over 30 offical record realeses.

16. Voted Best live band in the world.

17. Never broke up due to internal problems EVERYONE is still GREAT FRIENDS! EXTREMLY RARE IN A BAND OF 40YEARS!!

18. Created MANY musical teqniques that Bands commonly use and Don’t use today. Multiple climaxes, dramatic off key chord changes, all for reasons like atmospheric and musical effects, not just because…

19. Pioneers in using loops (FYI: the beginnings of R and B and RAP) and were the first to succesfully imploy the very first drum machines into their music.

19. They developed the Fisrt laser technologies used in concert. PInk floyd Floyd laser show? The floyd can thank Genesis for that…

20. Also expirmented with the fist pyrotecnictics on stage with dangerous explosions and smoke.

21. Flying into the stage, suspended inn the air be tiny wires? Genesis pioneered in the suspending peter gabreil at musical climaxes in the songs. Ground breaking at the time, they were forced to stop When Peter gabreil Nearly died when the wires got tangled up around his throat and started to lift him of the ground. THe idea was to revolutionary for the time.

22. Had the balls to go on tour before the release of the album. Including going on tour before the realse of a Double CONCEPT ALBUM! INSANE!!

23. Peter gabriel was recruted by the top film maker in Hollywood ( who wanted to revolutionize hollywood) at the time in order to be used as an ideas man because of Peters radical concepts in genesis.

24. PHil Collins only person ever to play in both Live AID concerts on two different contienents on the same day.(FYI: the biggest musical event in the history of the world)

25. Phil Collins the first to ever incorperate black musicains and music into popular music. That is HUGE!!!!

Donna Summer has the big belting voice Whitney Houston gets credit for, but doesn’t actually have (as Whitney’s disastrous performance on The Today Show proved a few weeks ago.) Whitney is referred to as The VOICE, and yet it’s Donna who actually has that voice. Even at 60, Donna has no problem touring the country belting out her classics and never missing a note. Donna is probably the most underrated singer ever. People refuse to look beyond her title as the Disco Queen. It hasn’t matter how exceptional her voice is, she’s rarely given credit for it.

As far as whether she’s “rock” or not, is Madonna rock? Madonna sailed right into the Hall of Fame first time she was nominated, there was no objection to her being merely a pop singer. Donna has far more credibility as a rock artist than Madonna. She won a Rock Grammy for “Hot Stuff”, which isn’t pure rock, but it is a blend of rock and disco. Her critically acclaimed “The Wanderer” album (1980) is pure rock, not disco at all. The Rolling Stone critics loved it, she placed 3rd in their critic’s poll for Best Female Artist that year. Bruce Springsteen also wrote 2 songs for her and proclaimed her a great rock singer. So why did Madonna, who has no credibility as a rock singer, get a pass when objections are made about Donna? It looks to me like Madonna got a pass for being white. Well time to make amends for that this year and let the tanned and talented one in.

Laura Nyro was rock’s first female singer/songwriter, and its greatest. Listen to the first four albums (More than a New Discovery, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, New York Tendaberry, and Christmas and the Beads of Sweat) – the dynamics, intensity, and invention are still breathtaking. Like the very few geniuses rock has produced (Dylan, Lennon, Hendrix) she synthesized everything that came before into something both unique and beautiful. She belongs in the Hall of Fame on songwriting influence alone, but what gets overlooked is her immense talent as a singer – a three-octave range, gorgeous timbre, and original sense of phrasing.

Please honor this great artist with induction.

Where’s Stevie Ray Vaughn. Arguably the greatest guitarist since Hendrix. Period. Respect the guitar. It’s what made rock ROCK! The Hollies were long overdue. I also like Laura Nyro. I don’t believe she’ll get in. Maybe if she ignored her manager, David Geffen, she could have fronted Blood, Sweat & Tears. Then they both would have gotten in. Then Jann Werner would have to swallow his pride and allow Chicago in the R’nR HOF.

Not to take anything away from many of the performers inducted in the Hall of Fame but there doesn’t seem to any logic to who is inducted or when they are inducted. The fact that the Beatles were not in the fist class to be inducted makes no sense to me. In addition, how can groups like Jethro Tull not be included? Tull is still actively touring after almost 40 years…hits like Aqualung and Locomotive Breathe are only a couple of many outstanding songs that are unequalled in the history of rock and roll…Ian Anderson is easily one of the most talented and unique performers in the world…
The “Hall” will never be complete without Jethro Tull as an inductee.

Saw the list for 2010! When is Rush getting in! The came out bk in the damn 70’s,like the Chilli PEppers, but there are many bands that should go first! Glad MEtallica made it this year! However being a big time metallica i still think other bands should go first! Only four other bands can say that every album at least went platinum, and you r talking elvizs, beatles, etc.,and Rush has 20 some old albums! Anyone that has probably ever pick an instrument up has probably heard of them, especially if u r a bass player or drummer! Have the record sales, have the influence, been out for 35 years, have written some of the most complicated music with time signatures that are all over the place! What does a band have to do to get in? Hell, just having a drummer like Neil Peart should get them in alone

The Chantels are long overdue… To recognize the Chantels is to give tribute to those who know how Rhythm and Blues (Pop) music began. The Chantels were among the first female groups who were able to crossover from R&B to Pop without any fanfair. Back in the early years they played instruments on stage while singing. I can’t think of any other girls groups who attempted that with style and grace as they did. If not for any other reason The Chantels deserve to be recognized for their contribution to the music that all other female groups have followed since the late 1950s. They truly lead the way. The Chantels, today are still Wowing their audiances with harmonic sounds and vocals that keep the fans wanting more.

I know it is very subjective, of who is more deserving than someone else, that being said, this rock hall could find a way to keep elvis and the beatles out if given the chance. Why these and not others, what logic made Red Hot Chili Peppers get nominated? Sure there is the time element, 25 years, but what other logic. Lots of groups have had albums out over 25 years ago. As some have pointed out, The Moody Blues were innovators. The concept album, early stereo work, etc. And what about Peter Gabriel, he’s been very influential on rock, especially the video aspect.

There is no logic at all, or if there is some it escapes me. Honestly it discredits the rock hall idea that so many deserving acts have never even been nominated. I understood initially that you simply had to get some people in, and there was a back log, but after 25 years, you still cannot be trying to get around to acts that were eligible when the process began.

It’s actually quite pathetic that Depeche Mode hasn’t gotten in. Name one ‘alternative’ act that wasn’t influenced by Depeche Mode? Hell, they’re still selling out 2 nights at MSG after 26 years. It’s all politics I guess. I mean LL Cool J? Don’t they already have a Rap Hall of Fame? You couldn’t make room for an actual influential band? The Smiths, The Cure, New Order will never make it in because they didn’t play by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s rules. They had/have a unique sound but, didn’t regurgitate it repeatedly. They changed and evolved. So go ahead and leave out the most influential bands of the 80s, yet again

Why on earth are The Moody Blues not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Please tell me how a band that was so innovative, still touring & still packing in the fans, still rockin for over 45 years is not on the list. What is wrong with you people, are you not paying attention? You induct people who haven’t done sh*t, or who’s music is crap. It’s too soon for LL Cool J and the Red Hots - they may have had their first records 25 years ago, but there are much more deserving bands out there that did too. It’s early yet, so anyone who’s clamoring about the Smiths (who first would have been eligible just last year) had best sit tight…

Personally, I’m disappointed if not quite disgusted by the list. The Stooges and Donna Summer I understand even if others don’t (if rap is part of rock and roll - which I think it is - so is disco, and with only Aussie interlopers the Bee Gees having been recognized so far, and not just for their dance music, it’s high time the Queen of Disco got her propers. So where’s Chic?) All the major sixties British groups are in already (the Dave Clark Five was reaching a bit, doncha think?), so forget about the Hollies even if they were a pretty good pop band at the end of the day. What’s next, Herman’s Hermits?

ABBA are sorta deserving even though I hate them (after all, they were the most popular group on Earth for a period in the Seventies), but I question how much they actually have to do with rock and roll - more than Barry Manilow or the damn Moody Blues, granted. KISS is a brand, not a band, and Gene Simmons is such a loathsome character I’m not even sure we need another reason to ignore his horrible creation. Inducting Genesis means inducting Phil Collins; why not solo Peter Gabriel? (Marsh LOVES him.) Darlene Love was a Phil Spector accessory; the Chantels are yet another minor R&B vocal group with one great hit; Jimmy Cliff made half a great album in 1972; the Chili Peppers are fun, seminal even, but give me a break. LL Cool J was hip hop’s first major solo star and proved that it was possible for a rapper to enjoy a long career, but something about his inclusion smacks of tokenism. Maybe he deserves it, but it only seems right that KRS and Public Enemy should be there first. Wait ’til 2013…

Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Elton John and his songwriting partner, Lyricist Bernie Taupin, were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense whatsoever. If there had not been a Bernie Taupin, there would not have been an Elton John and vice versa. Their music was a collaborative effort. Bernie Taupin should have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame back in 1994 as a Lyricist in the Non-Performers category, the same year that Elton John was inducted in the performers category.

Bernie Taupin didn’t just write lyrics exclusively for Elton John. Bernie Taupin also wrote the lyrics for songs recorded by Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Kiki Dee, Cher, Alice Cooper, Robert Palmer, Melissa Manchester, Rick Derringer, The Hudson Brothers, Olivia Newton John, The Motels, Starship, Heart, Animotion, Stray Cats, John Waite, Martin Page, Peter Cetera, Bryan Ferry, Tammy Wynette, Little Richard, Marianne Faithful, Courtney Love, John Anderson, Willie Nelson, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Toby Keith, and Brian Wilson, as well as for his own singing career, both as a solo artist and as a member of his own late-1990s Country-Western band, The Farm Dogs.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin comprise one of the longest running and most successful songwriting teams of all time. Bernie Taupin’s 40 years of collaborative work with Elton John alone should qualify him for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Please induct Lyricist Bernie Taupin into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in the Non-Performers category. His induction is long overdue.

The Chantels truly represent the best of early rock and roll with those ballads of amazing harmonies that soared through our transistor radios and transported us to a state of dreaminess. I would love to see them inducted and feel it would be a travesty for them to be overlooked. They were a big part of my coming of age and I know all my friends from when I was a teenager feel the same way because I just celebrated my 45th high school reunion and when “Maybe” was played, the women all started singing in unison and remembered every word and who was their boyfriend when the song was popular. In fact some of those boys were right there in the room–what a great moment. I love the Chantals. Honor them. Thanks.

I don’t know anyone more deserving than Laura Nyro to be elected into the hall of fame. Her singular unique voice, innovative music style and passionate poetic lyrics are unmatched. She influenced such legends as Elton John and Joni Mitchell and changed the face of popular music for her time. And still, 40 years later, has an incredible following. She rocks!

There simply are too many worthy acts out there for all of them to be in the Hall yet. Twenty years later, and they’re still catching up. The Beatles and Rolling Stones didn’t even make it in the first two years of nominations.

My personal pick this year is Genesis. Their career spanned more than two decades, was as cutting-edge innovative as it gets, spawned solo acts Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel (not to mention other side projects), transformed from prog rock to pop, helped drive the MTV revolution, and packed stadiums. Their influence is undeniable, especially when considered as the aggregate of their work both individually and together. How can they NOT make it? This still may not be their year, but if it takes another 20, then I start throwing shoes.

Unfortunately I think The Chantels are being overlooked because they’ve been ROCKIN for 52 YEARS and no one that’s commenting is old enough to understand their historic significance. AND the fact that they are STILL out there rockin today!

Every great artist had their path paved by lesser known artists. For my generation these are The Chantels. Sure we all know The Supremes, but would they have made it if The Chantels hadn’t paved the way?

Look back in music history. These women were the PIONEERS and They are still thrilling audiences NOW, way after many of their peers are enjoying retirement. As active members of the music industry, and ladies with voices of gold, we MUST recognize their contribution to American Music History.

INDUCT THE CHANTELS in 2010 please!

When you think of the roots of Rock and Roll you Must think of the Chantals!! They set the scene for subsequent female groups and set the bar high with their true musicality. Their harmonies are delicious and are a part of our generation’s musical history.
I actually had the opportunity to hear the current configuration of the group several years ago and they’ve still got the magic. Please give them the recognition they deserve.

Hearing the song “Maybe” always brings back such wonderful memories of my high school years. They were a group that always had grace and class. I think they should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame so that they can be honored. I saw them perform a short time ago with other friends from high school and we were spirited back to 1958. Please induct them!!

Laura Nyro. The first female singer songwriter to break out of the pop mold and blend jazz, broadway, soul… and a remarkable heartbreaking live performer, not to mention everyone covered her songs from Babs on… Without her there would be no Joni Mitchell, no Carole King, no Carly Simon, no countless other women singer/songwriters.

Thank you for including Laura Nyro in your list of nominees for 2010. All are worthy. However, she is a great song writer but often overlooked is that she is also a powerful singer with tremendous range and unbelievable phrasing. I hope that of the 500 voters who don’t know her, take a listen, they will be hooked. Her words and music will live on even if not inducted because she is well loved by many but it would be wonderful for her to receive this honor. Thank you–

Rock & Roll is about the whole movement of Rock…the fans, the music, wanting to share your stage with others! It’s about playing for 2 hours and giving your fans their moneys worth..not playing your music exactly as the album..why go see a band if they are not going to recognize the fans?? KISS has done that and more, they have influenced groups not even in Rock!(Garth Brooks) SHOUT IT OUT LOUD!!! VOTE KISS!!!

For 2010, Abba, Darlene Love, Donna Summer, Hollies..

it’s clear that it doesn’t matter whether an artist is REALLY a Rock and Roll performer or not.. But, it seems to be important that whoever gets to nominate and vote, must think they are?
Laura Nyro was a great artist but, SHE’s NOT a rock and roll performer! much like many previous inductees, too numerous to mention.. If you include Laura , then you must also include Barbra Streisand and, while Barbra’s talent is way over Laura’s, should she not be inducted first? But, these are not rock performers just great artists!

But, hey, how about Neil Diamond for pete’s sake.. Neil was a icon of the rock era in the 60’s and just on that body of work should be a automatic inclusion.. Why not?

Very much underrated and not included are Tommy James and the Shondells. Again a top tier group of the 60’s era, with many top 10 hits and longevity..

Unfortunately, there are far too many artists who deserve induction into the Hall but, have not yet been tapped for whatever reasons? Some of the previous inductees are suspect? Miles Davis was a icon JAZZ PERFORMER, not a rocker!

If this trend continues the Rock and Roll HOF will not be much more endurable than Playboy magazines annual list of Great Jazz artists published years ago..But, it wasn’t much more than a popularity contest..

First and foremost - Genesis. If only because the band should go in before Peter Gabriel goes in for his solo work, which he should. How great would it be that the classic Genesis lineup of Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Collins and Hackett would perform together at the induction ceremonies. Open the ceremonies with the curtain going up and the band doing “Watcher of the Skies”?

From this years’ nominees, I’d also like to see Kiss, Stooges, Laura Nyro and The Hollies. Would be a fun ceremony to watch.

My take on others who need to get their due:
Moody Blues
Chicago
Alice Cooper (talk about a pioneer)

My vote: As I think the Chantels should be inducted…

1.Red Hot Chili Peppers: Simply the best band in the universe and need to be inducted, as well as get a star on Hollywood Blvd…It’s about time! The hard thing is Guitarist John Frusciante (one of the best musicians alive) as well as the rest of the band have idolized the music of a lot of the competition…It’s hard to place them in the same lineup, but this is a spot they rightfully deserve…
2. The Stooges…Iggy Pop and crew…simply iconic and well deserved spot.
3. Jimmy Cliff The Legend ’nuff said!!!
4.KISS well it’s Kiss…they need to be here.

5.Last would be a toss up between Genesis, and ABBA…both have had a huge impact on culture and Music History…and a career that catalogs a lot of great songs from their eras.

Great line up this year…wish there were more spots!!!

People with a nostalgia for the world of the 1950s/1960s and for their own lost adolescence understandably love the Chantels. The Chantels were probably one of the first female singing groups to have nationwide success. They were definitely rock and roll pioneers and set the standard for other female singing groups from then on. The Chantels lead the way in class, grace and distinction and deserve to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Although everyone on the list should cause of their contributions to music but Donna entered a new era of music, besides electronics, disco, and united two genres like rock and dance; she together with Giorgio Moroder introduced the EP with Love to Love You Baby, also layed the foundation for other dance songs with I Feel Love. Donna has an amazing voice, and a ton of hits from dance, disco that she wants to stay away from-She is the true QUEEN of Disco, rock, pop and the beautiful gospel. Still holds the record for most double LP’s one right after the other. She deserves this!

If I had two more picks I would add Kiss and LL Cool J

Darlene Love should get in after the Chantels and Kiss should be in after Alice Cooper, who was not nominated. Abba should be in because even though they are pop they had an R and B, rock and roll beat to most of their hits. Hollies someday. But there are only five votes.

The Stooges are loved by east coasters but they really were not that influential, third tier . Where are Moby Grape and other third tier groups from the West Coast. Look at the Voter list and you see it is very heavy east coast. They might get in but should they be.

Laura Nyro. I have three of her records but she is not a Hall of Fame Artist. Just like Leonard Cohen, She should not be there. The problem is that the category for them should be Song Writer or Influence. But the HOF only has an Early Influence Category and does not cover modern influences.

The Rush issue

All Canadians and some US fans want Rush in. They Flood Every Web site with the request.

The Problem with Rush and other Progressives is they tended away from the Rock and Roll beat. Album Rock Stations stared playing this style of music but this was Rock not exactly Rock and Roll. Rhythm and Blues actually was more like Rock and Roll than some of the Progressive, Album, Arena, Heavy Metal, Slasher etc…

Saying that, a lot of this stuff did have Rock and Roll beats in some of their material and Rush was one of the more Rock and Roll oriented of these groups. Rush should be in but they will probably have to wait for Yes and maybe Jethro Tull.

It is a real shame that they had to wait all this time. What they have done for the music world is like no other. They have influenced so many people and have helped so many bands launch their careers. 37 years later, 40 albums, the largest fan base “KISS Army”, most tribute bands ever and so on… There are so so many things to say. IF I WERE PRESIDENT OF THE RRHOF…

I would induct at least 12 artists every year. Seriously!! Reading all these posts, it occurred to me that there are many overlooked artists like RUSH for example, that still need to be put in. The HOF needs to start catching up.

Last year, I watched the Class of 2008 being inducted on TV. There were 5 artists, I think 3 sidemen, and like 2 lifetime achievement people. I had to wait until close to 1 am to finally see Metallica get their due!! Ridiculous!!

This is what I would do. Like how sports do all-star weekends, the HOF should do the same. Do all the sidemen, builders, “Susan Lucci” agers, and all that crap on a Friday night, and then do 6 artists on the Saturday, and then 6 on the Sunday. This way, overlooked artists like RUSH can get in, and the HOF can still honour those artists who are eligible on their first try. I think Mr. Wenner should RUSH to it!!

The Hollies need to be in for the same reason that The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield are in…Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Genesis should most definitely be in the hall . The Stooges! Without them alternative rock doesn’t happen. RHCP have been a main stay on the rock charts and need to be honored. The last spot should be for Rush but will probably go to Donna Summer or ABBA who don’t deserve it in the slightest.

Interesting to see how every fan has their own unique agenda as to who should be in or not…though I never thought the likes of Chicago would have such passionate defenders! Since I firmly believe the old timers deserve to get their due before any young’uns (age/rage before beauty and all that, even if the comparative young’uns here are all getting on in years themselves), my personal choices from the list would include the Chantels, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, the Stooges, and above all, THE HOLLIES! Reasons for the Hollies’ criminally long-overdue inclusion are numerous…others have listed them far more articulately than I ever could here:

The Chantels truly represent the best of early rock and roll with their classics of amazing harmonies. They were one of the first female R & B vocal groups to have nationwide success. The Chantels are also considered by many to have been one of the best female singing groups of all times. They were definitely pioneers in the rock and roll era. I would love to see the Chantels inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and feel it would be a travesty for them to be overlooked.

Anyone who has the taste level, and hasn’t, should definitely check out Laura Nyro. This woman not only wrote scads of wondrous songs, but performed them to a level beyond belief. This girl could blow a song at her piano, dude. She sang her guts out. Hers was some of the most haunting, emotional, miraculous music I’ve ever heard in any genre. So those of you who have an ear but haven’t heard, are in for a very special musical gift.

Of this List, I would only vote for Genesis. The deserve to be in the Hall since 1992 (25 years after their first release), but better late than never.
I would also induct Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins as solo artist.
Besides Genesis, maybe Kiss for creating their own style of Rock, but they deserve to be in the Fashion Hall more than in the Rock Hall…
Last, what the hell is the hall waiting to induct RUSH???? They deserve to be here more than metallica, ramones and talking heads, just to name a few… Dear Sirs, please induct Rush ASAP!!!! but for now, please make sure to induct Genesis!!!!!

The Stooges. After 30 years apart upon reforming as the Stooges (not Iggy &, but the Stooges) in 2003 the band were having some of the most exuberant and wide spread success of their career. Unfortunately, this exuberance would be short lived when the sudden and tragic death of the beloved Ron Asheton shocked us all. A devastating blow that would have in all likelihood derailed this glorious reunion if suffered by lesser bands. However, we are not talking about weaklings, we are talking about “a most powerful band, the Stooges.” With a fortuitous move almost no Stooge fan saw coming Iggy invited James “the Skull” Williamson to rejoining the band. The man that had helped to reshape the Stooges sound for the Raw Power album would be returning and the dream that so many Stooges fans had seen at last fulfilled in 2003 would not die with Ron. With the Stooges recent nomination for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the announcement of dates for 2009’s ATP and a 2010 tour being planned along with recent releases of both Robert Matheu’s book titled “the Stooges: An Authorized and Illustrated Story” and Easy Action Record’s exquisite “You Don’t Want My Name…You Want My Action” box set there seems to be quit a large buzz not only on the web, but also in the mainstream media. It’s about time. If they are not induced this time the Hall and its supporters should be ashamed of themselves.

I believe that there arent enough nominees on these lists. Plus if you could, nominate in catergories like, Top 10 rock bands, 10 singing groups, 10 solo artists, and 10 personalities. If you vote 3 to 5 nominees of each catergory there certainly would be less argument. I have quite a list of my own I wish who could be nominated. Just the 10 rock/metal bands themselves… Rush, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, J.Geils Band, Boston, Heart, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, or even Chicago. And theres so many more. I would even suggest to add genre wings to the Hall… The Heavy Metal wing, The Hip Hop wing, The Disco wing, The Blues wing, and even a Gospel wing.
I am certainly planning a visit to the Hall sometime. I believe those that have earned recognition, deserve recognition.

The Chantels deserve to be in the R&R Hall of Fame because of the beauty of their sound and the grace and elegance they have shown over the last 50 years. We saw them recently in Naples, Florida and they were just as smooth and polished as they were when they first started their careers. The best thing about them is that they have all continued to be clean living, non-drug abusers and professional artists and will represent the prestige and honor the Hall of Fame stands for. They are long overdue… By recognizing the Chantels you will be giving them the tribute and honor they deserve especially for those who know how Rhythm and Blues and now Pop music first started. They were the first female group who crossed over from R & B to Pop very easily and without any big deal. They are still giving their audiances the same harmonic sounds and vocals that keep the fans wanting more. I would give them more votes if I could. Honor their efforts at pleasing us through the years by inducting them into the R & R Hall of Fame in 2010.

A different way to approach this may be what would be the best show from a ratings stand point.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and LL Cool J would draw the most young viewers.

Genesis is the old school type Super Group and probably has the most sales except maybe Donna Summer.

Abba is at the top of a rebirth because of Mama Mia.

Kiss is also in vogue because of Celebrity Apprentice and Gene Simmon’s Reality Show.

But then again you don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket because next year you are also going to need some star power.

To make a good show I think I would put

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Abba
LL Cool J
The Chantels
Genesis

Genesis
The Hollies
KISS

Donna Summer

Ok who should be inducted based on REAL talent, culture and music contribution to genre and history. The real hall of famers are:

1.Kiss
2.Donna Summer
3.Genesis
4.The Stooges
5.ABBA

I do think LL Cool J have stood the test of time, but as for quality his contribution “I Need Love” that was really it for him, he put out a lot of crappy songs just like RHCP. I mean truly there people that should be on this list instead of them, like Tina Turner, Pat Benetar, Heart,Annie Lenox or Eurithmics…

I not sure what the criteria for being nominated but it looks more less like quotas they are trying to fill as oppose to REAL ART, TALENT, AND CONTRIBUTION.

These are legendary bands were very influential and I cannot believe that they are passed over year after year. I do agree that a band like ABBA was both influential and very successful BUT THEY ARE IN NO WAY A ROCK AND ROLL BAND.

Thank you,

I would like to see motorhead in there or at the very least the legend that is Lemmy. Without Lemmy there would of been no Motorhead which in turn means there would of been no metallica as well as other metal bands.

Rock and roll as Steven Tyler put it makes you play it too loud, make your parents angry and piss off your neighbors. Well folks KISS does that. Although their guitar riffs are weak they are rock. Some of those other bands are not rock music. Crap ooops rap raeggae dance music pop music is NOT NOR EVER WILL IT BE ROCK. Van Halen is rock and so is AC DC. Too this I add my boy Stevie Ray Vaughan has a spot for him. As he cut his owm niche out. Oh yeah if you don’t like him try listening to him cover Jimi’s stuff. He did it better than anyone. Bon jovi def belongs also. Is Albert King in here?? as he influenced a generation of great guitarists. He ahs been imitated by alot of players as is SRV

Some good suggestions in the blog:

RUSH…no brainer
HEART..no braner
SRV…no brainer..
KISS…finally

The most obvious oversight in my mind is Paul Rodgers. He is my favorite singer and he makes everyone’s list of greatest rock singers. I would like to see Bad Company as well as FREE in the Hall. Rodgers career is awesome. The Firm albums w/Page are great. Recently Paul received some much needed pub singing with Queen. who is one of Brian May’s favorite singers, P Rodgers.

Until Paul is in the “Hall”, I’ll be disappointed.

You wanna know who belongs in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I’ve got one band and one band only, Pantera. If Metallica can get in so can Pantera. I’ll put Pantera’s best anyday against Metallica.

If Everyone would just admit the Truth….KISS has made a HUGE impact in the world of MUSIC. Everyone from Lenny Kravitz to the late Dimebag Darrell has been influenced by THEM!! but Bono and Springsteen along with others will never accept them because of their Music.

Genesis, especially Peter Gabriel, is way way way way overdue! I defy you to go see a Musical Box re-creation of their early 70s concerts, when they were all in their early 20s, creating such a mindblowing meld of classical and hard rock with Gabriel’s creative, storytelling lyrics, and still deny their innovative genius.

If Abba, LL Cool J and Donna Summer get in before Genesis, it will be a travesty & a joke… who would be next, Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince? Ace of Base?

Seriously I think they all need to be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame but they forgot one major group of the 60’s.

I strongly feel that The Royal Guardsmen should have been nominated for the Hall Of Fame.

Lets not forget them, who could forget Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron or Baby Lets Wait. These guys are still out there making great music go to their website and see. http://www.theroyalguardsmen.com

Thanks

We are talking about Rock and Roll not “Rock”. Some maybe too young to remember the real rock and roll groups. Chantel’s were great. Let’s stick to the title of the Hall of Fame.

What in the #!*& will it take to get John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers in the R&RHoF?!?

Together in various lineups over 40 years, either launched or help launch the careers of EC, Mick Taylor, John McVee, Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, Buddy Whittington and a host of lesser-knowns. No Mayall - then probably no Cream, no Fleetwood Mac, no EC solo career (he first sang on “The Bluesbreakers Featuring Eric Clapton” at John’s insistence!), and many, many wannabe/copycats over the years.

And most of the above and others still come back to play with John for special events, check out his 70th birthday DVD! Does he have to die to be considered?

“HALL & OATES, the greatest duo of all time?”

Justin, please… Great, yes, of all time? The Everley Brothers, The Righteous Brothers, Sam & Dave, Simon & Garfunkel, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell…

John and Daryl definitely deserve to join the class, but at the head of it? Don’t think even they would agree with that.

If Brenda Lee and Jackson Browne-two great artists are in the R & R hall of Fame , where is Neil Diamond? He has entertained millions for over 40 years and has written some great music. I find it puzzling that he was not inducted 20 years ago. Thank You

The Stooges should definatly get in, I was hoping after Metallica got inducted this year that they would start accepting heavier music because Iron Maiden and Judas Priest deserve to be in well before Kiss in my opinion, what is Kiss going to be inducted on? A good stage show? I thought this was about music.

Let’s not neglect the Chantels. If you have not heard them, listen up. They are still around and they started back in the late 50’s. They should be recognized for the part of history they play in laying the foundation of a girl band crossing over from R&B to Pop. They deserve a nod this time around.
