The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, is home to a singular collection of Jimi Hendrix artifacts that help tell his story, from his boyhood days in Seattle, Washington, through his meteoric rise to superstardom.
In this clip, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum curatorial director Howard Kramer tells the story behind two of the guitars featured in the Rock Hall's Jimi Hendrix exhibit: the 1967 Gibson Flying V dubbed "Love Drops" and the 1960s 12-string Zemaitis acoustic made famous when Hendrix played it in the 1973 movie A Film About Jimi Hendrix.
Though his career was relatively brief, Otis Redding was a singer of such commanding stature that to this day he embodies the essence of soul music in its purist form. His name is synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying up until his death in 1967. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will honor the life and music of Redding, a 1989 Hall of Fame inductee, with an exhibit and film screening. Redding would have been 70 on September 9. That day, the Hall of Fame will unveil a spotlight exhibit with more than 20 artifacts in the Ahmet M. Ertegun Main Exhibit Hall. On Wednesday, September 7, the Museum will screen the film Dreams to Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding.

How do you capture the dynamism of live performance on a two-dimensional screen? In celebration of Black History Month, the Rock Hall will present a special film series, “Double Exposure: African American Music on Film,” highlighting the central role of African Americans in the history of rock and roll. We’ve chosen films that cover a wide range of musical styles, from the from gospel pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (The Godmother of Rock and Roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe) to soulman Curtis Mayfield (Movin’ On Up: The Music and Message of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions) to hip-hop innovators Run-D.M.C. (Krush Groove). Each film features legendary performers, including many Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. The films also reflect historical and cultural changes in African-American culture during the rock and roll era. We’ll have special introductions and discussions to some of the films by guest scholars, producers, filmmakers and Rock Hall Education staff. All of these movies will be screened in the Rock Hall’s state-of-the-art Foster Theater and are free with a reservation.

In about 10 days, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will unveil its new, state-of-the-art theater. The Foster Theater was made possible by a generous donation from Gregg and Madolyn Foster, and it features a fantastic 3-D viewing experience and enhanced audio.
To inaugurate the theater, the Museum will be presenting U2 3D, the brilliant 3-D concert film featuring the Hall of Fame inductees. The movie was filmed in South America during the final leg of U2’s Vertigo tour in 2006. The movie captures all of the excitement and energy of a U2 stadium show. And the 3-D effects and awesome sound make the audience members feel as if they are right in front of the stage. It’s as if Bono, Larry, Edge and Adam are right there in the room with you.
