Director of Development - Job No. 0903

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is currently considering applicants for the position of Director of Development.  The Director of Development reports to the Vice President of Development and is responsible designing, implementing and managing philanthropic fund-raising functions for the Museum.  In particular, this position is responsible for soliciting funds to underwrite the Museum’s general operations and related education programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develops, plans and implements Museum Development efforts that include the following:
• Orchestrates broad based contributions programs from Cleveland area and national/international corporations, small businesses, private foundations and individuals.
• Manages and oversees annual giving campaign, membership campaign, matching gifts, grants program, direct mail and web based fund raising efforts.
• Advances annual, capital and project fund-raising.
• Works with staff, members and volunteers to pursue fund-raising opportunities.
• Establishes relations with Museum members, patrons and donors and creates additional opportunities to receive financial support.

2. Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Development staff.
• Reviews workload, schedules, assignments, and monitors status of on-going projects.
• Prepares and monitor operational and staffing budgets.
• Works with Vice President to develop long and short-term department goals.
• Assigns specific duties and projects, considering individual knowledge and experience.
• Monitors daily operations, provides direction and assists with completion of work when necessary.
• Coordinates work activities with other departments.
• Recommends appropriate action to resolve issues.
• Evaluates performance, provides feedback and conducts performance evaluations.

3. Provides direction to implement Major Gift strategies and tactics outlined in the Annual Fundraising Plan to meet or exceed annual and capital campaign fundraising goals.
• Preserves and deepens relationships with current financial supporters;
• Establishes and builds lifetime relationships with potential and past financial supporters;
• Strategically, systematically and aggressively provides opportunities for philanthropic participation to fulfill the organization’s mission.

4. Establishes a pool of approximately 300 - 500 major gift prospects that is a representative balance of individuals (75%) and corporations (25%).
• Reviews the current donor base and President and CEO’s contacts to determine if any current or lapsed supporters should be targeted for cultivation and solicitation.
• Conducts prospect research and identification to help identify new major gift prospects.
• Meets with Board Directors to secure their support in engaging those current prospects with which they have connections.

5. Makes or helps to secure an average of 200 meaningful major gift calls per year (50% cultivation and 50% solicitation.
• Engages in ongoing cultivation and solicitation of donors and prospects in face-to-face meetings.
• Implements cultivation strategies utilizing events, materials and visits.
• Oversees Major Gift cultivation and recognition events.
• Handles a portfolio of approximately 200 Major Gift donors and prospects.
• Routinely queries the Board of Directors to ascertain relationships with potential new donors.
• Prepares funding proposals and case statements.

6. Travels off-site and/or out of state when required.

Duties include but may not be limited to the above.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor degree required in related field; advanced education preferred.
• Eight years managerial experience in a responsible development position, preferably in national museum, cultural or performing arts institution.
• Proven record of accomplishments in income production and membership growth with extensive knowledge of charitable and planned giving.
• Proven experience with budgeting and forecasting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of direct mail and online fundraising. 
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Problem solving and decision making skills.
• Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
• Ability to successfully pass a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum reference check, background investigation and drug screen.
• Computer Literate:  Microsoft Products; Database Management System.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Ability to work at least 40 hours per week; any shift as assigned, including evenings, weekends and holidays.  Ability to work additional hours as workload demands.  Hours are primarily 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
