March and April 2013 | Suggested Grade Level: 5-8 / 9-12
This class illustrates the complicated and changing roles of women in hip-hop. From early pioneers, to the game-changing artists of hip-hop’s second wave, to today’s leading innovators, women have continually (and effectively) worked to have their voices heard in a genre too often dominated by men. By exploring representative songs from artists such as Roxanne Shanté, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj, students will examine the undeniable, yet often overlooked, impact and influence of women in hip-hop – then and now.

I am the school social studies teacher in an inner city school. The minorities in my school need programs like this to show that they too can make an impact on the world.
