Teachers Rock: Rock the Classical

The worlds of classical music and rock and roll are often seen in opposition to each other when in fact, composition, arrangement and performance techniques of both styles often influence the other. In this special Teachers Rock co-hosted by the College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA), Rock Hall educators Jason Hanley and Kathryn Metz  presented class material from “Ambassador to the Orchestra: The Arranger in Rock and Roll.” The class was followed by arrangements of songs by the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and others performed by by the Oxford Chamber Orchestra, The Mergers (Miami University) and Northern Kentucky University Ensemble.

ABOUT CODA:

The College Orchestra Directors Association is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of college and university orchestra programs through the collaborative assistance, insights, knowledge, creativity, resources and shared vision of its members. CODA champions the art of teaching and performing orchestral music and strives to encourage and support the artistic, professional and personal growth of college orchestra directors and their students. The association serves as an advocate for the crucial dual roles of the orchestra in the higher education community; namely, providing an essential component in the development of educated students of all majors, and refining the vocational and personal skills required of those preparing for various careers in music and other disciplines.

“Stop and Listen”: Using Spoken Word and Slam Poetry in the Classroom

We hosted a special workshop inspired by the inventive wordplay of our 2012 American Music Master honoree – Chuck Berry, with guest presenters Amy Rosenbluth (Lake Erie Ink) and Kathy Lawrence (Cleveland Heights High School). Teachers learned how to bring spoken word and slam poetry into the classroom to help students connect with learning and with themselves. This workshop was appropriate for upper-elementary through high school teachers (Grades 4-12). Read more about this Teachers Rock here.
