I Want To Take You Higher: Opening Party

Let me Take you Higher
May 10, 1997

If you’re going to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, you need a psychedelic bus traveling across the country; a concert at San Francisco’s Fillmore; and a day-long music festival featuring Big Brother and the Holding Company, Donovan and Country Joe McDonald leading the crowd in the Fish Cheer. All this - and the some - transpired in May, when the Museum opened its new exhibit, I Want to Take You Higher: The Psychedelic Era, 1965-1969.

When the Museum asked Ken Kesey if the Further bus could be part of the exhibit, Kesey offered to drive the bus from Oregon to Cleveland, accompanied by his Merry Pranksters. The cross-country trip stopped in San Francisco for a psychedelic reunion at the Fillmore (a fitting locale, as artifacts from Bill Graham’s career are featured in the exhibit); the musical backdrop for the party was provided by members of the Grateful Dead, the Charlatans, It’s a Beautiful Day, Sons of Champlin and Big Brother. The Further bus arrived on the Museum’s plaza midway through the day-long festival that marked the official opening of I Want to Take You Higher.
