The 1993 Induction Ceremony

At the 1993 Induction Ceremony, the groundbreaking and building plans for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland were announced. The anticipation for the building ran a close second, though, to the eagerness for the inductees, particularly Cream, rumored to perform for the first time in two-and-a-half decades.

For the first time, the induction ceremony was held in Los Angeles. A new tradition was the enlistment of young artists to play the music of inductees, with the then-unknown Counting Crows performing Van Morrison's "Caravan," Boyz II Men taking on Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and Eddie Vedder standing in for Jim Morrison alongside the Doors.

Fittingly, for the Hollywood crowd of fourteen hundred, an actor was on board for the first time to handle an induction: Billy Crystal gave a funny and moving speech about his uncle, the great record man and producer Milt Gabler.
