The 2002 Induction Ceremony

2002 marked the first induction of punk-era bands. The band -- David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison -- then played together for the first time in nearly two decades. Dee Dee and Johnny Ramone expressed excitement in meeting their fellow inductees of teh old-school variety, Brenda Lee and Gene Pitney, but because of the 2001 death from cancer of Joey Ramone, the band did not wish to perform.

For the first time, high-school teachers were thanked from the podium -- courtesy of inductee Isaac Hayes, who offered gratitude to some of his, by name. Young artists Jewel and Alicia Keys gave heartfelt speeches about Brenda Lee and Isaac Hayes, respectively, while Jacob Dylan recalled being in awe of Tom Petty as a youngster. A special tribute to Stax Records, whose cofounder Jim Stewart was inducted, brought sweet soul music to the fore.
