The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is pleased to announce the winner of the first-ever Riot Girl award presented at Riot Girls & Rebels: A Celebration of Professional Women Who Rock.
Congratulations Eliza Wing, President and CEO cleveland.com
2008 Northeast Ohio Rock Hall Riot Girl
This event, designed to honor women who are an inspiration - professionally and personally - and involved in arts and cultural organizations, promises to be an exciting tribute to women who make a difference in our society. The event is presented with generous support from KeyBank. This year’s media partners are WKYC Channel 3 and Cleveland Business Connects magazine.
Who is a Riot Girl? She is…
- An Accomplished Businesswoman
- An Outstanding Supporter of Community Involvement
- A Creative Leader with Her Own Unique Leadership Style
- A Role Model for Female Empowerment
- A Hardworking Businesswoman who has a Little Rock and Roll in her Veins!
In addition to the Riot Girl title, the winner will have $1,000 awarded in her name to the charity of her choice and will receive two tickets to the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, including flight and hotel accommodations.
The event’s honorary co-chairwomen are Karen Haefling, chief marketing officer for KeyCorp; Paula Jo Boykin, president of Spectrum Design Services; Linda Abraham-Silver, president and executive director of the Great Lakes Science Center and Valarie McCall, chief of Government Affairs for the city of Cleveland. Monica Robins from WKYC Channel 3 emceed the event. Two very special guests were also be honored at the program’s inaugural celebration: Music industry executive Barbara Carr and musician Joan Jett.
Barbara Carr has worked with musicians as a partner in Jon Landau Management - Bruce Springsteen’s management company - since 1980. She attended Marymount College and the London School of Economics, and has worked for Atlantic Records, ABC Records and Champion Entertainment. She and her husband, well-known rock writer Dave Marsh, live in Connecticut. In memory of their younger daughter, who died at age 21 in 1993 from sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, Carr leads the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, which has raised more than $6 million to benefit cancer patients.
Joan Jett embodies everything a Rock Hall Riot Girl should be. Her music and her career demonstrate that good things come from breaking the mold of tradition. Her enthusiasm is contagious: Generations of women sing along with her as she proclaims her allegiance to her chosen art form in her classic track “I Love Rock and Roll.” She, along with her group, the Blackhearts, will perform at the Riot Girls gala.
