Aimee Mann Performance
Throughout her solo career, Mann has watched record labels go from heated courtship to abandonment without a whole lot of rhyme or reason. She is among the many who have carried on written songs in the shadows of corporate mergers. But rather than just complain, Mann has taken her production back, helping to create the United Musicians network and taking control over her own catalogue. And this well before it became commonplace to start your label and run your own shop.
But it’s Aimee’s songwriting that makes her an ideal guest for The Craft Artist Series. With striking consistency, she has found ways to give songs what they deserve. Never burying them in production, never cleaning up their sentiments in such a way that the emotional center is obscured, Aimee Mann has rightfully earned a reputation as an artist of high principle who stays true to the medium in which she works. With humor and dignity both she continues to explore the limits of the form.
