In order to provide you and your students with models of how to talk about musical excellence, we have created sample projects around five Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees from a range of time periods representing different styles of music: Chuck Berry (inducted 1986); Black Sabbath (inducted 2006); Bruce Springsteen (inducted 1999); Madonna (inducted 2008); and Run-DMC (inducted 2009).

For each artist, there is a short video clip of a Rock Hall Educator talking about the artist’s significance. There is no single model for how to do this and each of us approached it differently. Each Rock Hall Educator used different media for their sample project.

Chuck Berry: Inducted 1986

In this video, Education Instructor Kathryn Metz discusses the IMPACT, INFLUENCE, and INNOVATION of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Chuck Berry.

Kathryn: "While most people recognize Chuck Berry as a rock and roll pioneer, I focus on how his impact on the growth and perpetuation of rock and roll lies in his skills as a gifted lyricist, unparalleled guitarist and innovator."

"For my Voice Your Choice project, I created a Prezi, which is a cloud-based presentation software that has a zoomable canvas, which makes it fun to explore ideas and the connections between them.  I’m a visual learner, so the possibilities for incorporating exciting images and videos into my presentation were appealing to me. I had never used Prezi before, but I found it remarkably intuitive. I used a basic Prezi template and started with images of Chuck Berry as my canvas. The hardest part was understanding how to effectively use the software’s “frames” – a way to group ideas, images and videos -  in the presentation, but once I got a handle on them, I was able to block information into useful, visually engaging chunks that illustrated my main points about Chuck Berry’s influence on the development and perpetuation of rock and roll."

Bruce Springsteen: Inducted 1999

In this video,Vice President of Education and Public Programs Lauren Onkey discusses the IMPACT, INFLUENCE, and INNOVATION of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Bruce Springsteen.

Lauren: Bruce Springsteen’s impact on his audience is key to understanding his importance in rock and roll, but that impact goes beyond just popularity. So I focused my presentation on the elements of his music that fans identify as meaningful to them—songwriting and performance. For my Voice Your Choice project, I chose to write a persuasive essay. The goal of a persuasive essay is not necessarily to get someone to like the music that you like, but to get them to understand the strength and logic of your argument. So I’m not trying to get my readers to say, “I like Bruce Springsteen, too.” I’m trying to get them to think, “Now I understand why Bruce Springsteen is important and recognized for his work by the Hall of Fame.” The key to any good piece of writing is using evidence, and I used evidence throughout the essay: lyrical analysis, to illustrate his songwriting; quotes from concert reviews to illustrate how people responded to his work; quotes from public figures about his political and social songs; and quotes from contemporary artists who have been influenced by Springsteen.

Black Sabbath: Inducted 2006

In this video, Director of Education Jason Hanley discusses the IMPACT, INFLUENCE, and INNOVATION of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Black Sabbath.

Jason: “In my video presentation I wanted to think about Black Sabbath’s legacy as one of the first heavy metal bands and examine some of the innovations they made in musical sound, lyric writing, and visual image, and how they inspired generations of fans and musicians.”

“For my sample project I chose to make a musical influence chart using the Mindomo website.  The site allows you to create what it calls mind-maps, and I found this to be a very effective way to show how some musicians influenced the sound of Black Sabbath and how they in turn influenced others.  I began my project by doing some research and making lists of musicians I thought were connected to Black Sabbath in some way.  I put Black Sabbath at the center and then placed the bands that influenced them at the top in red.  I decided to group bands that were influenced by Sabbath into musical styles.  I was happy with how this turned out since it showed various styles of rock and roll that were connected to Black Sabbath and helped to organize the other musicians.  I also added some ‘clickable’ features so that others could explore the map and learn more about the music (click on any of the + signs to see more information).”

Madonna: Inducted 2008

In this video, Education Programs Manager Stephanie Heriger discusses the IMPACT, INFLUENCE, and INNOVATION of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Madonna.

Stephanie: “Very few musicians have influenced popular culture the way that Madonna has.  I chose to focus on her excellence (and fearlessness) in performance, her depth of musical awareness, her power to reinvent and reimagine herself as an artist, and her influence on other musicians and on the larger landscape of popular music.”

For my sample project, I used Glogster to create a graphic blog (glog) – an interactive online poster incorporating text, images, music, and video.  It was important for me to visually represent Madonna’s changing styles and approaches over her nearly 30 year career, so I chose pictures that represented some of those key changes.  I also chose to include music videos that showcase pivotal moments in her musical development.  These videos also underscore her artistic understanding of music video.   Beyond what is represented visually, I linked many of the images to important information found online (biography, lyrics, album reviews, Induction information, etc.).  I also included key songs.  Glosgter allows you to create an online poster that acts as a ‘landing page,’ allowing users to explore further depending on their interests.  Just hover on the images/icons to expose the links.

Run-D.M.C.: Inducted 2009

In this video, Education Coordinator John Goehrke discusses the IMPACT, INFLUENCE, and INNOVATION of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Run-D.M.C.

John: "Although commercial success can be relevant when evaluating an artist's impact, it does not necessarily equate musical excellence.  For that reason, I focused my oral presentation around other factors, identifying Run-D.M.C. as innovators, barrier breakers, and trendsetters."

"For my accompanying project , I chose to make a PowerPoint presentation.  My approach was simple – create a presentation that was both visually engaging and informative.  I created a template from scratch, as I’ve found this produces something much more impressive than your standard PowerPoint.  I used the Run-DMC logo as the inspiration for my color palette, which created a unifying theme throughout the presentation.  I modeled each page’s header after the “Voice Your Choice” logo.  In conveying the information, my goal was to be succinct, yet useful.  One of the biggest pitfalls of PowerPoint is creating a presentation that is too wordy and, thus, hard to follow.   When used properly, PowerPoint can be a great tool to enhance an oral presentation."
