SIGNATURE SOUND

Rising from the R&B hotbed of late ‘60s Memphis, Al Green and producer/collaborator Willie Mitchell developed a signature, sensual soul style, employing restraint and exuberance, gospel fervor and pop savvy. Green’s ‘70s offerings ranged from lush arrangements to spare, funky grooves, expanding the palette of soul. After a hiatus from pop, Green returned, embracing both secular and sacred music.
