Born Ernest Evans in Spring Gully, South Carolina, Chubby Checker became the king of the ‘60s dance crazes, with his iconic “The Twist” reaching the No. 1 spot twice and sparking a worldwide, multigenerational phenomenon. Checker parlayed that unprecedented success into further hits like “The Fly” and “Limbo Rock,” hitting the charts 32 times before ‘66. He broadened rock & roll’s audience beyond teenagers and remained active into the new millennium.

Signature Sound
Chubby Checker evolved from Philadelphia street singer to renowned rock & roll impersonator to record-breaking hitmaker, the face and voice of international smash “The Twist.” From the early ‘60s into the new millennium, he explored a wide array of styles, from psychedelia to disco to hip-hop, packing dancefloors everywhere.
On Checker’s debut he portrays a music teacher. He impersonates Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, the Chipmunks, and others. The record hit No. 58 on the U.S. pop chart.

[Checker’s] ‘The Twist’ was the first time in musical history that all generations could freely admit that they liked rock & roll music.
