Cowritten with Hooters’ Rob Hyman, who also sings backup, this was Lauper’s first No. 1 on the Hot 100. It has become one of her signature songs.

Originally envisioned as a gospel number for Anne Murray, who rejected it, Lauper re-arranged this song as a delicate and passionate ballad. Another No. 1.

True Colors

Embracing loops and samples, Lauper delivered this funky number, an exuberant dance hit and a clear reminder she was in it for the long haul. 

That’s What I Think

The big number that closes out the hit Broadway musical Kinky Boots, this song helped nab Lauper her first Tony.
