As one of rap’s first breakouts, LL COOL J created the template for the hip-hop superstar. With mainstream success, he still retained the rawness of his renowned battle rhymes, while also making room for intimate recitations over hooky instrumental tracks, pioneering the rap ballad. His crossover success as a film and TV actor helped bring hip-hop culture to a global audience.

Signature Sound
Beginning as a 17-year-old Def Jam prodigy, LL COOL J initially hit in ‘85 with gritty, “boom-bap” rap, aggressive flow, and streetwise braggadocio. By decade’s end, he’d pioneered the rap ballad, employing smooth pop hooks and enjoying massive crossover success into the ‘00s and beyond.
With an AC/DC sample, sharp rhymes, trademark bravado, layered rhythms – but no actual bells – the track catapulted LL to stardom.
