In-demand songwriter, groundbreaking producer, label exec and video trendsetter Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott holds the record for most platinum albums by a woman rapper. Elliott forged new paths for women in the music industry and beyond by unapologetically owning her body, her sexual desires, and her Blackness.

Signature Sound
After crafting sonics and songs for others, Missy Elliott forged her own sound with Timbaland in the mid ‘90s, incorporating gritty beats and futuristic textures over playful raps. In the ‘00s, she pushed hip-hop’s boundaries with electronica, offbeat rhythms and old-school funk, presenting unique, avant-garde, yet always accessible productions.
After writing and producing hits for others, Elliott leads off her debut with this jam, featuring a sample of Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain.”

Missy’s “Michelin”Headgear
Elliott wore this headpiece at a Cleveland concert in August 2024. It’s similar to the one she donned with an inflatable jumpsuit in the music video for her debut solo single “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).”
“The outfit was a way to mask my shyness behind all the chaos of the look,” Elliott said. “[And it’s] a symbol of power. I loved the idea of feeling like a hip-hop Michelin woman.”

Missy has always been a futurist, someone who’s always looking ahead. She is avant garde without even trying.
