Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 15, 2018 - 10:00am to 5:30pm

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King at the Rock Hall

Music was an integral part to the Civil Rights Movement, and musicians often stood alongside Dr. King during many of his appearances in the name of racial justice. From the Freedom Singers to Mahalia Jackson, Bob Dylan to Sam Cooke, musicians have regularly played a role in advocating for social change.

We will be accepting hat, coat, glove and scarf donations that will benefit the Providence House. Make your donation when you visit.

MC & DJ ALL DAY LONG: Dj Ryan Wolf

As The Official DJ for the Cleveland Browns, Z107.9 On-air Mixer and Chopstar Dj, DJ Ryan Wolf has come to take his city by storm. Falling in love with music at a young age, DJ Ryan Wolf claims he had an ear for music but decided that his instrument of choice would be the turntables. Determined to set the bar in mixing; DJ Ryan Wolf studies from the likes of OG Ron C, DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Drama. What makes him different from any other mixer is his ability to incorporate blending, scratching and mixing to come up with a unique style that is only his own.

The Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word is a group of African-American males ages 8-18 who study the art of performance poetry. These gentlemen take classic poetry pieces, movement poetry (mime/breaking/ flexing) and combine it with the art of spoken word. Poetry has become the living tool that they use to help keep them focused and on the right path in school, at home, and within the community. Alongside learning poetry, they attend weekly character development classes (Life-skills, Drug Prevention and Crime Prevention Education).

Cleveland Metropolitan School District Digital Arts High School boasts a number of creative endeavors, including a step team that has performed across the city. They made their own music video in front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in June 2017 where they demonstrated their incredible skills.

Marie and Rosetta!

Get your front-row seat to music history in the making for this preview of Cleveland Play House’s Marie and Rosetta! “The Godmother of Rock n’ Roll” and 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Early Influence Inductee Sister Rosetta Tharpe — who influenced performers from Elvis to Hendrix — plucks prim-and-proper Marie Knight from a rival gospel show. The two challenge one another on music, life, and The Almighty.

Cleveland Play House welcomes performers Miche Braden as Sister Rosetta, and Chaz Hodges as Marie Knight as they bring this extraordinary story of heroism to life for two women who changed the landscape for modern music.  This story of letting loose, finding your voice, and freeing your soul is a soaring music-theatre experience chock full of roof-raising performances.
