Cleveland is home to many working within the music industry, including musicians performing in and around NEO, teaching artists passing on their knowledge and skills to others, radio station staff sharing the newest hits, marketing teams promoting arts and culture events, and so much more. Join our host and moderator, Mariama Whyte, as you meet Cleveland residents of color working in the music industry right here in North East Ohio. Learn about the panelists’ backgrounds and the journeys they took to get where they are today. Hear about their struggles and successes, as well as their advice to newcomers to the field. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.

Panelists include Angelita “DJ Misses” Owens (On-Air mixer for Cleveland’s Z.107.9 & Cincinnati’s 101.1 The Wiz), R Rohnesha M. Horne (Marketing Director for Radio One), Quincy "Big Heff" Taylor (Def Jam Records & VP of Nerve DJ’s), and Chris “Goody” Goodman (Photographer). 

Mariama Whyte (moderator)

Mariama is a singer, songwriter, actor, and educator from Cleveland, OH.  She recently performed in the highly-acclaimed “Simply Simone: The Music Of Nina Simone” at Karamu House as well as a tribute in honor of 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Nina Simone at the Rock Hall. She has played leading roles in the Broadway National Tours of The Lion King and The Color Purple.  A graduate of Shaker Heights High School and The College of Wooster, Mariama has shared the stage with famed music producer David Foster, Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child and has released various independent music projects. She is currently working on her upcoming album, Hey You It’s Me, to be released in 2019. www.mariamawhyte.com

 

Rohnesha M. Horne (panelist)

Rohnesha is the Marketing Director for Radio One in Cleveland, Ohio. Her career began with Radio One in 2008, as the Assistant Marketing Director. In 2009, Rohnesha was promoted to Promotions Director for the cluster and most recently in May of 2017, she was promoted to her current position.  Rohnesha is responsible for producing several flagship events with Radio One such as the EmpowerONE series, Radio One Family Day at the Zoo, Z107.9’s White Out concert and Z107.9’s Summer Jam concert.  In March 2018, Rohnesha accepted an opportunity to work as an Instructor for Media Sales & Marketing at the Ohio Media School. She was soon promoted to Program Director over all Media & Sales courses for the school. Rohnesha has received recognition from “Who’s Who in Black Cleveland” and enjoys public speaking to encourage and engage young aspiring media professionals.

 

Angelita “DJ Misses” Owens (panelist)

DJ Misses is a 24 years old from Richmond Heights, Ohio. She graduated From Central State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry & has an unexplainable love for music! She became a DJ in 2013 and has worked her way up to DJing for concerts, clubs, & celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian and more. She now DJs full time and is a On-Air mixer for Cleveland’s Z.107.9 & Cincinnati’s 101.1 The Wiz.

 

Quincy "Big Heff" Taylor (panelist)

Born in Chicago IL raised in Cleveland, OH, in 2011 Quincy became the VP of the Nerve Djs, a Cleveland based DJ coalition that is nationally recognized with 2000 members. In 2014 Quincy became the Ohio Valley Region

representative of the historic hip hop label: Def Jam Records. In 2015 Taylor received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ohio Hip Hop Awards. In 2018 Big Heff won Industry Power Player of the Year at the SEA Awards.

 

Chris “Goody” Goodman (panelist)

Chris Goodman is from the Northeast Ohio area who enjoys music of all kinds. From graduating top of the graduating class at Ohio’s Media School in 2011 to winning Photographer of the year award for the Ohio Hip Hop Awards.. Chris has been a freelance photographer for over 5 years and worked with many notable names such as Nike, LeBron James, Gabrielle Union and more! Working along with many DJ’s, Radio Personalities, and Media outlets has given him a lot of great learning lessons and knowledge.
