First class Grandes momentos en rock: Música popular a través de las décadas will be taught in Florida


CLEVELAND (December 4, 2008) – For the first time the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will deliver its award-winning distance learning program in Spanish to ninth grade Spanish language students from Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Using a high-tech, fully interactive videoconferencing system, students will learn how key moments in rock and roll history have helped to shape the world we live in.

On Monday, December 8 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and on Monday, December 15 at 2:03 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. EST, Kathryn Metz, an educator at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, will be beamed into Pine Crest Preparatory School for one-hour-long music education sessions.

Metz will be teaching a course called Grandes momentos en rock:  Música popular a través de las décadas (Great Moments in Rock and Roll: Popular Music Through the Decades). The students will actively participate in discussions about shifting cultural values, conceptions of equality and political activism. They’ll also learn how Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees have used music to bring about important changes in the world around them. The class is focused on key historical moments such as: Elvis Presley’s early national television appearances in 1956, the 1969 Woodstock music and arts festival, the birth of MTV in 1981 and the fusion of rock and hip-hop in the 1986 video for “Walk This Way,” among other important events.

This innovative class is part of On the Road, the Rock Hall’s award-winning distance-learning program that reaches second- through 12th-grade students all across the country and around the world. In the spring of 2008, On the Road received two awards: a Teachers Choice Award for Best Content Provider and honorable mention for the CILC Pinnacle Award, which is based on teacher evaluations submitted through the CILC website and recognizes outstanding performance by a content provider. Over the past several years, the program has benefited over 15,000 students in 29 U.S. states and it has reached classrooms in Mexico, Canada and Australia.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is at the forefront of bringing popular culture into the classroom. The Museum’s state-of-the-art videoconferencing technology allows it to offer incredible educational experiences, teaching children and young adults the ways in which music has played a part in some of the most important social, cultural and political issues in modern history.
