YWCA Racial Justice Challenge

RAISING AWARENESS

Watch folk icon Buffy Saint-Marie discuss her approach to teaching through her art and the power music has to reach people.

Buffy Saint-Marie on Teaching through Music

Buffy Sainte-Marie promo photo. Gift of Larry Bruner. Buffy Sainte-Marie was the most widely heard Native American artist of the 1960s. Her songs – sometimes challenged – addressed themes of war, justice, and the Native American condition. In 1977, she appeared on Good Morning America to debate Rep. Jack Cunningham from Washington on his bill to abolish U.S. treaties with American Indian nations. She used the opportunity to educate the world about the realities of Native American sovereignty.

Janet Jackson Open-Reel Tracking Sheet. Collection of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The arrival of her third studio album Control (1986) introduced a new Janet Jackson – free from the shadows of her family and seizing command of her own destiny. Themes of empowerment and self-confidence ("Nasty," "Control," "What Have You Done for Me Lately") have remained staples of Jackson's career.
